The CAF's Electron Microscope and X-Ray Unit (EMX) gives researchers and research students access to a range of multi-disciplinary electron microscopy, x-ray services and more.
These are used for imaging, elemental identification, quantification and mapping of a wide variety of sample types. SEMS in the EMX have been used to analyse many different sample types from bone fragments to organic electronic films to plant cells to catalysts to clays and minerals, to name just a few.
These use a transmitted electron beam to discover information about materials at high magnification. This information can include imaging up to atomic level (TEM and HRTEM), identification and mapping of elemental composition using electron dispersion X‐ray spectroscopy (EDS), and characterisation of crystal structures using selected area electron diffraction (SAED).
This analysis is applicable only to crystalline materials and is most often used to determine the identity of phases or compounds in a sample. Most samples are powders, but the XRDs in the EMX are also able to analyse solid samples and thin films (glancing incidence).

Call or email one of the CAF's dedicated instrument specialists to discuss your research needs (please see Contacts at the bottom of this page).
Our team can assist with project planning, method development and data analysis to ensure you get the best outcomes from your time and samples.
Register for online training for any instrument you wish to use, see the link on the iLab "Request Services" tab. This training is compulsory and a certificate of completion must be uploaded to iLab before a user is able to be inducted to use EMX equipment.
Online Training is available for SEM Equipment, TEM Equipment, and XRD Equipment.
Compulsory Safety Training for ALL XRD Users
All XRD Users must attend compulsory training entitled "Radiation Safety for Unlicensed Users of X-ray Equipment" that is held at least twice a year at the UoN Callaghan campus.
Registration via Discover or by email to Melissa.Musicka@newcastle.edu.au
Training dates will be publicised in the EMX, on Discover and by email. The training takes a full day and participants must pass an exam at the end of the day.
Course completion certificates must be provided in .pdf form to emxray@newcastle.edu.au
Before you step into the EMX lab please attend an induction session. All inductions commence at 9am and are held in the EMX. All EMX Users and visitors must wear appropriate enclosed footwear to the EMX.
You can register your interest for induction by emailing emxray@newcastle.edu.au.
Important Note - Before you are able to book an instrument you will need to ensure that all induction and training activities are complete.
To make an assisted booking with an instrument specialist, please make a Training booking on the required instrument through the Schedule Equipment tab.
